Online Affiliated Marketing

Online Affiliate Marketing is a revenue sharing venture between a website owner and an online merchant. The website owner will place advertisements on his websites to either help sell the merchant's products or to send potential customers to the merchant's website, all in exchange for a share of the profits.
Affiliate Marketing Program
An affiliate marketing program is sometimes called an affiliate program, but also may be referred to as a pay-for-performance program or an associate program. An affiliate program is a marketing tool for the e-business that operates it, called merchant or advertiser and a source of revenue for the e-business that participates in it, called an affiliate or associate or publisher.
There are three ways to earn money through affiliate marketing:
1) Pay per Click or Cost-per-click affiliate programs: Every time a potential customer leaves the affiliate website by "clicking" on the link leading to the merchant's website, a certain amount of money is deposited in the affiliate's account. This amount can be pennies or dollars depending on the product and amount of the commission.
2) Pay per Lead or Cost-per-lead affiliate programs: The merchant pays the affiliate a set fee for each visitor who clicks through and takes and action at the merchant's site, such as completing an online survey, registering at the site, or opting-in to receive e-mail.
3) Pay per Sale or Cost-per-sale affiliate programs: Every time a sale is made as a result of advertising on the affiliate's website, a percentage, or commission, is deposited into the affiliate's account.
The Amazon Story
The world's biggest bookstore has one of the most successful examples of an affiliate program (called their associate program). Amazon now has well over 1 million affiliates! That is over 1 million websites actively promoting their products every single second of every single day. Amazon generates over 40% of its revenue through its affiliates program. That is over $3 billion in revenue every single year! As another (somewhat humble by comparison) example, Zeald generates over 50% of its revenue using its own unique affiliates program. Admittedly, not quite billions of dollars but that is definitely millions of dollars of revenue every single year.
Thousands of diverse e-businesses operate affiliate programs: E.g. barnes&nobale, dell,1-800-flowers, rackspace managed hosting etc.
Affiliate Programs as a Marketing Tool
The two major Advantages to merchant
1. Tie marketing effort directly to a lead or sales.
2. The merchant pays only for results.
The two major Advantages to affiliate
1. Additional source of revenue for affiliate who also sells products/services
2. Primary source of revenue for affiliate who offers entertainment or information
Two Approaches to Operating a Successful Affiliate Marketing
1. Acquire a huge and affiliate membership. e.g. The Amazon associates programs have over 1 million members as diverse as:
- RVPart - Sells parts for recreational vehicles and motor homes.
- Dilbert - Site for view cartoons, play games, send electronic greeting cards etc
- Books for Managers - Site for business reviews and lists of the currant top-selling business-related books provided by Business week, The New York Times, the Wall Street Journal, USA Today, and other publications.
- HaperCollins - Its site to promote its authors and their books. However, like many book publishers. HaperCollins sells its books through bookstores and not directly to the public.
2. Acquire a smaller number of highly effective affiliates that have a high volume of website traffic and offer web page content, products and services that are directly related to the merchant's products and services.
Affiliate Programs as a Revenue Source
Participating in an affiliate program and then getting the most out of your participation involves:
- Selecting the appropriate merchant and affiliate program for your e-business
- Understand the terms of the affiliate agreement
- Add custom links to merchant's site from affiliate Web pages
- Build traffic at affiliate site to increase click-troughs to merchant site.
Top 10 Tips for Choosing the Affiliate Program That Is Right for You
1. You have to identify a product or service for which there is a need. The product should be such that you would love and enjoy promoting it. You could start by searching for "Affiliate Programs" in the Search Engines.
2. The product or service should be relevant to your website.
3. It is always wise to join an affiliate program that is long standing, safe and secure and has a good reputation in the Internet world. This can be easily verified from the Better Business Bureau or other similar organizations. Visits to Forums and Discussion Groups will also provide you with a lot of useful information.
4. Most affiliate program providers provide a commission of 5% to 50%. The commission you earn for the sale of a product is your main income. So while choosing an affiliate program you should study the commission paid out and decide on a program that pays at least 35% for you to run your business successfully.
5. There should be a proper tracking system in place to record all the clicks and sales made through the text links and banners placed on your website, e-mails and other advertisements.
6. One important factor that is often overlooked is the "hits per sale ratio". This indicates.

Five Steps to a Great Affiliate Program

An effective affiliate program can be the lifeblood of your business. Not only do affiliates send you traffic and sales, but they provide incoming links and good public relations for you in the marketplace.
So how do you return the favor? By providing an excellent affiliate program for them. Here are five steps that will bring you closer to that goal.
1. Clear signup process. Write a description of your affiliate program that talks about what you sell, to whom and what you expect from an affiliate. Then tell them the types of tools you provide for them in order to make the most sales possible.
Make it easy for them to sign up. And make it easy for them to sign into the affiliate area by providing a link to the affiliate area directly on the sign up page.
2. Step-by-step training program. Most people who sign up for your program are new to affiliate marketing. They liked your product, so they signed up. Now it's up to you to teach them how to market your programs - as well as any other affiliate product.
Assume they know nothing and start with the basics in an autoresponder sequence. Tell them about each of your products - describing just one per week. Tell them about the tools you provide and how to use them with their marketing efforts. Show them how to read and interpret their statistics.
While industry statistics indicate less than 5% of affiliates actually do anything, you don't want that to be descriptive of your affiliates. Educate them!
3. Ongoing communication. In addition to the autoresponder sequence of educational emails, consider a monthly affiliate update. In this you might offer tips from other affiliates - or testimonials from customers that they can use in their marketing messages.
Consider a monthly teleseminar with you. You'll find it makes for a closer relationship and you'll have direct input as to what they need. It will give you better ideas on what to create or provide for them, as well as your marketplace.
4. Easy to use affiliate tools. Standard tools include banners, graphics, emails, and articles. Be sure you include their affiliate link on each of these so that it's a simple copy-and-paste operation. Better selling affiliates are busy, so respect their time and make your tools "no- brainers."
5. Timely payments. Nothing will turn off an affiliate faster than not getting paid on time. The sooner you pay them after the sale, the more likely they are to send out another promotion on your behalf. It's motivating to see a check arrive or money deposited in your PayPal account.
And don't restrict payment to just payments for sales. Contests, awards and prizes are meaningful, too. So ask them what would make their affiliate work more fun - then give it to them! When you start with these five steps, you'll be 95% further along than most affiliate programs. And you'll be attracting all of the best affiliates in no time!

When to say "When" to an affiliate program

How long should you promote an affiliate program before you make the decision that it just isn't going to work for you?Let's face it, no matter how well a particular product maydo on other websites, it just might not be right for yours. Statistics show that only a small percentage of affiliatesfor any given program actually make any money. What happensif you are one of those that falls into the category not making money? Is it time to take down the site and let the domain name registration expire? No way! But it just might be the right time to make some changes to your strategy. Analyze your website and the programs that you have signed up for. Determine which of those REALLY appeal to your target audience. I said REALLY because I want you to look at the programs from the viewpoint of your visitors, not from the viewpoint of which ones are supposed to make you the most money. There's a lot of advice out there on which programs to pick foryour website, highest commissions, monthly payout, online reporting, etc, etc, etc. The fact is that you don't always have that choice to make. You need to concentrate on the products that your visitors will be the most interested in. What programs compliment your website's content and theme are much more important than signing up for every program promising to make you rich with only one sale.I'm a great example of the above information. One of mywebsites caters to a highly targeted audience. I have tried many affiliate programs and advertising solutions on that site over the past two years. You know which program consistently beats all others? Amazon.com!I get paid quarterly not monthly (make that a month or two after the quarter has ended), I only get credited for that visit, not repeat visits, and up until about a month ago had to wait until Monday of each week for my emailed statistics.Believe it or not boys and girls, Amazon.com doesn't fit into the 'model affiliate program' mold that we read so much about. Now, I'm not trying to be hypocritical here, I too feel that you should do your best to find quality affiliate programs that offer all of the above benefits and then some.I'm just trying to tell you that if you find a program that really appeals to your target audience, you CAN make some money with it. Don't pass up products that your visitors would really be interested in just because the program doesn't have the highest commissions. Because if your visitors do purchasefrom a particular program and you can show consistent salesyou will be able to appeal to the merchant and ask them to consider increasing their payout to you. This happens a lot in this industry, especially if it is a goodfit for both sides. Worse case you might be able to get awaywith telling them that if they don't cooperate with you, you're going to change to another program. Chances are they don't want to lose your business, and they will work somethingout for you.So now we've done the easy part and dumped the programs that weknow aren't appropriate for our site. What about the ones thatare fairly targeted to our content and that our visitors mightbe interested in? How do we know when the amount that we aregoing to earn doesn't justify the time and effort to promote aparticular program?I once read that you should give at least 3000 impressions to any given program before making the decision to keep it or dropit. I don't quite agree with this statement. According to this,I post a banner on my site, and if it hasn't made me any moneyby 3000 impressions, dump it.We all know (at least I hope we do!) that there is much more tobeing successful with affiliate programs than just adding banners to your rotation. So how do we set a benchmark? This has to be determined by you.It is based on your website, your visitors, the program, and theamount of effort you have put into promoting the program.Have you blended the product offerings in with your content?Have you given personal recommendations for any of the products?Have you displayed the links and/or graphics prominently so thatthe majority of your traffic has a chance to see them? Have youmentioned new product offerings to your newsletter subscribers? If you can answer yes to the majority of the above questions, then you can make a determination as to how long to try theaffiliate program. If you've done these things and your visitorshave passed right by the offerings for a decent time frame andnothing has happened...its time to move on!Find another program and give it the same due diligence. If youdo this with each and everyone of your targeted programs, you WILL find a program that will perform for you! This process should be familiar to you...many, many internetmarketers preach this concept...simply known as...TESTING!! Youronline career is a series of continual tests. Try one product, if it doesn't work for you, get rid of it and try another one. After you have done this testing, then and only then, can you say "When" to an affiliate program.

How Is Todays Economy Affecting Affiliate Marketing?

In the 3D world, starting a new business requires quite a bit of start up money to get going. There are expenses from purchasing paper to renting or buying an office and/or production facility. I'm not sure that, even if I had the resources available, I would undertake such a task in today's economy. An affiliate marketing business, however, can be implemented from scratch, with little or no start up expenses. All that is needed is a computer, and an internet connection, which you probably already have. If not – there is always the library!Retailers are reporting that the amount of revenue generated form their physical or mall stores is down – but revenue generated from their online sources is up! Online shopping revenue continues to rise, in some cases by over 10%!Those people involved in affiliate marketing today, while still earning impressive incomes, are also watching the economic trends and taking appropriate measures to ensure that their income continues to flow in. This involves careful research into the products and services that continue to sell as well as watching for what the consumers are looking for and then providing that product or service to them.Market research can be difficult and time consuming and one of the biggest hurdles for newcomers to affiliate marketing to learn, understand – and use effectively! With the economy the way it is finding a profitable niche is more important than ever. There ARE profitable niches and digging into them with today's buyer in mind can turn out to be a goldmine for any affiliate marketer. The problem remains, however, on just how to go about finding these profitable market niches. One approach would be to check the Google Trends and find out what people are looking for when they search on Google. Many, many people use Google as a sounding board of a type. They get a thought or an idea and wishing to know more about it they try various search terms on Google. They are information seekers. If there is a hot new product coming out on the market, chances are that it has been searched out through Google. This is where an affiliate marketer can do their research and find, not only a specific product to sell, but also the search terms that are bringing potential buyers to sites that are selling that product.Another approach to finding out what people are looking for is to check the article submission sites and find out what people are reading about the most – what's popular. Again, these are information seekers, but delving deeper into the niches from these articles can help the affiliate marketers pinpoint the areas of most interest, profitability and then reveal the products and keywords that are selling. For a newcomer to affiliate marketing, finding a profitable niche can be a daunting task.

Article Marketing For Internet Affiliate Programs

When you decided that the time was right to look for business opportunities that let you work from home online, internet marketing affiliate programs like those offered by Click Booth were likely a big draw - for good reason; they make it possible to make money fast. For those affiliate marketers who made the decision not to design their own website (at least initially) and for those who have their own professional sites alike, article marketing is an effective tool for getting the word out about the products and services that you are promoting. Even if you only work from home online, you'll find that article marketing can easily be fit into the activities that you perform while running your home based business. The reason that even those who believe that they "cannot write" turn to article marketing to get the word out is simple: how else can you make money online free? That's right. When you write and submit articles to various article directories on the web, you'll be able to reach a wider audience without having to pay for the advertising. Of course, reaching people about the internet affiliate program products and services that you're promoting will take a bit of finesse. While good articles always include a link to the page that you are promoting - either within the article itself or in the resource box that lets you tell readers a bit more about who you are and what you do - the goal of the article is to inform. In other words, an article isn't a sales pitch. Instead, the articles that you use to market and internet affiliate programs should benefit the readers. Use your articles to focus on relevant information; let the reader see that what you're telling him or her is really to his or her advantage. If, for example, you've chosen to promote a Click Booth service such as satellite television, don't focus on selling that service. Instead write an article that speaks to the frustrations that they have with their cable company overcharging for inferior service; explain what satellite TV really is and provide some history. This sort of quality content that is appealing not only to the readers but also to publishers who are looking for content to use on their blogs or websites is far more valuable than a short link ad. You did read that correctly - publishers of ezines and other email newsletters as well as a wide variety of bloggers and webmasters scan article directories to find content that they can include on their site: this is a remarkably good thing. Each time a publisher reprints your article, all of the links that you included must be in tact and active; that means that every time your articles are used, another link to the internet affiliate program product or service you were marketing will show up online. Article marketing helps to establish your credibility by showing that you know what you're writing about. Article marketing draws attention when your articles provide the information that people are already looking for. Others will put your links up for you by republishing that content. And, again, it's free advertising for your home based business.

The Affiliate Roadmap to Success

If you're looking for a quick and easy way to start making money online, consider joining one of the Web's free affiliate programs. There are endless free to join affiliate programs available on the 'Net — in any category you might be interested in. And joining an affiliate program is without a doubt the easiest way to start earning an online income. Here's how it works. You become an affiliate for another company's product by joining their free affiliate program. Then you promote their products or services on your website. Anytime someone you refer buys something from them, YOU get paid a commission. And the best part is that it doesn't cost you anything to get started! Most good affiliate programs will offer you free resources to help you promote their products effectively. Things like banner ads, salescopy, or product photos that in many cases have already been tested and proven to work. You simply download them and use them on your website. Why are they willing to do this? Well, the better YOU are at promoting their products, the more visitors and sales THEY'LL receive. So everybody wins! You're helping them get customers that they might not have been able to get otherwise. And you earn money for doing so! The amount of money you can earn from affiliate sales will depend on a number of factors: Commission amount. Companies will offer anywhere from 5% up to 50% of a product's sale price — a BIG difference. Price point of product or service. A higher price point means a higher dollar amount for you, depending on the commission. This should be balanced with the commission amount. Potential volume of sales you can make. Some highly specialized products can sell far more infrequently than others, limiting the number of sales you can make in a given time period. How effective you are at promoting their products. The amount of time and effort you're willing to put into promotion is a HUGE factor. Techniques like building an opt-in list and using email marketing to build relationships with your site visitors can catapult your earning potential. There are a number of ways to find free affiliate programs. But if you're just getting started, you might want to check out affiliate directories like AssociatePrograms.com and AffiliatesDirectory.com. They provide lists of credible free to join affiliate programs that have been pre-screened. You can also sift through websites that sell products you're interested in. They'll tell you if they have a program they can join. As an affiliate, you earn a commission for any sales made by people who click through from your website and purchase an affiliate product. So making money with website affiliate programs is dependent on maximizing the number of sales your site visitors make. And in order to maximize sales, your website needs traffic -- and lots of it! Here are some techniques that will help you send visitors to your website: Achieve a high ranking in the search engines. Make sure your website includes keywords that target your particular market. When the search engine "spiders" come to index your site, they'll boost your site higher in the rankings for those keywords. Ideally, you want your site to show up on the first or second page of search results. Write short articles that will be distributed all over the Web. All that's required is about 400 words on a subject related to the product you are promoting. Include your byline and a link to your website at the bottom of each article, then submit them to free article directories, like EzineArticles.com. When other site owners who are looking for content for their own sites republish your article, your name -- and site link -- will be propagated all over the 'Net. Buy pay-per-click traffic. One of the fastest ways to drive additional traffic to your site is by advertising with pay-per-click search engines, like Google AdWords. All that means is that your link shows up in the section for paid advertisers. Then every time someone clicks on your link from a search engine results page, you pay a pre-determined amount. Build a list of visitors' email addresses. This allows you to contact your visitors again with valuable information that will lure them back to your website. Or, you can even promote affiliate products directly by email. It's a great way to build relationships and trust, which translates into more sales over time. Once you've got these tricks working for you, it is much easier to start making money online with affiliate programs.
